Twenty years ago mute swan numbers were in serious decline due to the use of lead fishing weights but since the sale of lead weights was banned in 1987 the species is recovering. However a recent report (Aug 2007) in my local paper suggested that they could now be under threat from poachers who are capturing the birds for food. Hopefully this will not become a widespread problem.
